本首聖詩（不含結束段）由聖安波羅修創作。本讚美詩充滿了聖經的典故，是禮儀之中最優秀的聖詩之一。在羅馬特利騰日課，用於從主顯節至大齋期，以及從9月28日至11月26日的禮拜日晨曦禱（Lauds）所使用。在新禮日課之中，用於時辰祈禱常年期的第一週和第三周主日晨禱（Lauds），但，少了第五和第六段。在莎霖日課之中，它用於主顯節後至大齋期主日的讚美經。
