本首聖詩(不含結束段)由聖安波羅修創作。本讚美詩充滿了聖經的典故,是禮儀之中最優秀的聖詩之一。在羅馬特利騰日課,用於從主顯節至大齋期,以及從9月28日至11月26日的禮拜日晨曦禱(Lauds)所使用。在新禮日課之中,用於時辰祈禱常年期的第一週和第三周主日晨禱(Lauds),但,少了第五和第六段。在莎霖日課之中,它用於主顯節後至大齋期主日的讚美經。
